Founded in the mid-nineteenth century by German settlers, New Braunfels became a successful farming and ranching community. The German flavour of the local culture remains very strong, with bier gartens, and oompah music aplenty. The town is known for its sausages, breads and river resorts.

The Guadalupe River and the Comal River offer water based recreational activities for visitors. The Guadalupe is known for its rapids, which is why tubers love it. Nearby lakes offer great sailing opportunities.

Wurstfest is a sausage festival that is celebrated for ten days in early November. Meat lovers will be in heaven!
